2012-02-07 Super Bowl Monday?
Not too wild of a weekend of course, but I helped show the newcomers the ropes around here. I attended a wild themed party at Saint Petersburg’s only gay bar. If you have a Facebook, you might find my overly embarrassing attempt at coming off gay. No worries though, apparently no matter how much I pretend it does not seem to work, every gay guy automatically knew I was not.
Being nine hours ahead of the east coast has its ups and downs. Here is a major downside. The Super Bowl. I watched it, when kickoff was at 3:30 in the morning. My Facebook status sums it all up.
‘A second consecutive all nighter, at a bar on an island 45 minutes away by subway, kickoff at 330 am, nonsensical commentary in Russian, NO COMMERCIALS of any kind (we stared at a live feed of the field instead of commercials, I wanted to die), 5 hours of consecutive classes in an hour, all to watch New York beat New England again (I believe… in ELI!). Was it worth it? I will let you know in 7 hours.’
My old fellow teammates from the Neva Lions invited me to their private party and I dragged along the few willing Americans who would watch it. The absolute worst aspect of this was not the lack of American commentary, but the lack of commercials. It is one thing to not have the brilliant entirely new set of million dollar commercials but to have nothing… well that is extremely boring, especially at 4 am in the morning. We sat there viewing a live feed of the field, and it was excruciating. At least it was with good company to stay up all night with. Got back, powered through 5 hours of class, a major struggle mind you, and promptly fell asleep.
Way to go New York! I enjoyed watching the game and it was stunning to watch. I know they are not the Jets, but the Giants are definitely a second team to cheer for since their location… well is the same. Great fourth quarter and I hope the parade is great too. I just read that a bunch of students from UMass got arrested for rioting for the loss. Too bad for them.
My friend Angela celebrated her birthday at a Georgian restaurant Monday night. Of course I speak about the country not the state, which are coincidentally the same size. Look you learned something today! It was my first dinner out in Russia this semester, and it was very good. A great cuisine if you happen to be stumbling by.
