2012-03-16 Day One of Spring Break
Springing off the cramped bus from the airport which arrives at the center of the city at the main train station one looks around and does not see much. The city looks depressingly Soviet and seems to lack any sort of identity. A quick walk about lets one see a sparse pleasant building amongst the monotony yet without any true passion in its construction.
I was disappointed in Kiev for the first few hours. I signed us up for the hostel for the weekend as we planned and already started planning an exit strategy which would send us straight through a disruptive revolutionary Moldovan election. Yet given instructions to see the city center and eat at an authentic Ukrainian restaurant I was startled at the development.
The main drag of Kiev, a street that begins with a ‘k’ is remarkable. Every building is stunning in its own manner and along with epic monuments, sparkling modernization and spectacular Soviet style. It’s hard to explain the awe of Kiev’s main street but it is impressive to say the least.
Another feature of the city is due to its wide Soviet style street design. Many pedestrian crossings are underground which has built a sort of second street level underneath the norm. These confusing and intricate complexes are interesting but more hazardous in helping you get lost than being a plus.
Pictures. I will try and capture some of the images for y'all. I have the rest of the weekend here, and the prices here are easy and brilliant. Somehow I have to find myself in Bucharest in 9 days… Ugh. Challenge accepted.
